Lets talk Health,
Lets talk Health,
We exclusively breed purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. We believe that having healthy, well-loved parent dogs is essential to raising healthy, well-socialized puppies. All of our sires and dams live on-site (in-home) with us, and are beloved members of our family.
We take great care to provide a nutrient-dense diet, a clean home, and proper medical testing to all our dogs. When selecting dogs for our breeding program, we seek dogs with clean bill of health that goes generations back, the classic loving Cavalier disposition, and physical features that conform to the breed standard. Bloodlines are carefully examined to ensure that lines are not crossed.
It is important to be aware of the health issues that are common in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed. Health screening dam and sires significantly reduces the chances of your puppy contracting these health issues.
All our parents are AKC registered, OFA heart and patella/knees certified. We also test for Dry Eye Curly Coat Syndrome (CKCID) as well as Episodic Falling (EF). Many of our puppies have champion blood lines.
Heart mitral valve disease (MVD) - is the leading cause of death of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. MVD is a condition that leads to degeneration of the heart valves. Research shows that over half of all cavaliers will contract the disease by age 5 and nearly all Cavaliers by age 10. MVD has been found to be 20 times more prevalent in Cavaliers than in other dog breeds. We're happy to share with you our Cavaliers have been heart murmur free for three generations.
Eyes - Eye problems are common in the CKCS breed, affecting nearly 30% of Cavaliers. The most common being Dry Eye, Cataracts, Geographical Retinal Dysplasia. Ours dogs are tested annually and have passed all tests performed by licensed Opthomitrists.
Hip displaysia and Patellar Luxation - Hip dysplasia occurs when the ball and socket joint of the hip fails to form properly. It can affect one or both hips.
Patellar Luxation involves the knee (stifle) joint. It is most commonly diagnosed in small breed dogs, but can be seen in any breed. But you're in luck, after being exaimed by a veterinarian, our dogs test clear of this each year.
Syringomyelia and Chiari Malformation (SM / CM) -
CM is when there is an abnormal growth of bone that develops in the back of the skull, making the skull too small for the brain. This causes pressure on the cerebellum, which affects the flow of cerebrospinal fluid from the brain. This change in flow and pressure may result in or Syringomyelia (SM), a fluid-filled pocket that forms in the spinal cord. Most Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have CM to a degree, and about 50% have SM.
From the time our puppies are born, they receive early neurological stimulation to promote healthy brain development. Once the puppies are old enough, we provide numerous opportunities for mental enrichment and expose them to different stimuli and environments, such as running the vacuum or riding in the car.
AKC & OFA Breed Recommended Health Testing:
All of our dogs are OFA health tested and certified according to the AKC and OFA recommendations of the breed.
The OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) is an online database for canine health testing and certifications.
